Helping New York Kids Cope With Seasonal Allergies

Helping New York Kids Cope With Seasonal Allergies

Hello New York! Welcome to today’s children’s health and nutrition blog. Today, we are discussing seasonal allergies. Many New York parents wonder if their child’s sneezing and runny nose are temporary symptoms of a cold or seasonal allergies. Generally, colds also come with aches and a low fever and last only a week, while allergies can persist for an entire season. New York doctors are seeing new cases of seasonal allergies among people of all ages, especially adults. Is this an unintended result of more aggressive germ-fighting in childhood?

‘Researchers speculate that thanks to antibacterial soaps, hand sanitizers and other powerful germ-killing products, kids today are less likely to be exposed to the bacteria and viruses that help the immune system shift into gear and prevent them from developing allergies and asthma as they grow up.’1

Regardless of the possibility that allergies may persist into adulthood, there are several steps New York parents can take to help their child get through the allergy prone months with minimal discomfort:

Replace your filters (AC and furnace) at least every two or three months, and look for MERV ratings of 11 or 12 for maximum efficiency filters. Though it may be difficult during the hot New York months, remember to keep your windows closed at home and in the car. Check pollen levels online and try to have your child wait until evening to go outdoors when pollen counts are lower.

Have your child shower before going to bed to wash allergen out of his or her hair and skin so it won’t transfer to bedding and increase irritation during the night. You can also use plastic or allergen-proof covers for your child’s mattress, box springs, and pillows for extra protection.

Your New York doctor can test your child to determine the specific allergens and prescribe safe and effective medications.

New Sunscreen Recommendations For Garden City Infants

New Sunscreen Recommendations For Garden City Infants Babies love to be outdoors on a sunny New York day, but a new report from the American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that changes in the skin that lead to skin cancer may actually occur in a person’s first year. However, sunscreen is not recommended for Garden City children under six months of age. What’s a parent to do?

New York parents should be aware that infants have a much higher body surface to volume ratio than adults. Because of this, babies absorb much more of the chemicals in the sunscreen.

In addition, younger babies don’t sweat as efficiently as those older, so they are at greater risk of becoming dehydrated, and sunscreen can impair effective cooling by perspiration.

New York parents should dress infants in protective clothing and hats and keep them in the shade. If needed, a little sunscreen can be used on the face and hands, where sunburns often occur in young New York children.

Healthy Garden City Kids Are Well Rested

Healthy Garden City Kids Are Well Rested

Getting an adequate amount of sleep is essential to the health of Garden City kids. During sleep, muscles, skin, and bones actually grow and repair themselves. The immune system is recharged during sleep, so this is especially important during the New York cold and flu season. Because the brain processes the stimulus and information it received during the previous day, sleep is crucial for healthy brain development.

Parents in the Southampton, Manhattan, and SoHo areas should do everything they can to make bedtime work for their family. One of the most important things is for New York parents to model healthy sleep behavior for their children.

If you want your child to follow a consistent bedtime schedule, you’ll need to follow one yourself.

It’s also important to check out your child’s sleep environment in your New York home. What is the temperature and noise level of the room? White noise might help your child sleep better. Fans or humidifiers that can be purchased at any SoHo Wal-Mart, Manhattan drug store, or Southampton Target store are inexpensive and do the job well.

Give your child a screen-free room in which to fall asleep. This means no TVs, computers, iPods, or cell phones. In fact, turning off all screens an hour or two before bedtime will help the whole family fall asleep on time.

Make sure you include the children in planning a bedtime routine and then stick to it. If they have trouble saying goodbye after you’ve tucked them in, try giving them a special security object like a blanket or stuffed animal to fall asleep with.

‘SoHo CSRs: Hang Up Your Headsets And Call Me!’

Hang Up Your Headsets And Call Me

Some SoHo people without sales experience wonder if they have what it takes to run their own direct sales business. I think customer service experience is more important than sales experience in SoHo because customer service specialists know how to focus on the customer.

Why do some home business owners in SoHo struggle? A common reason is because they focus more on selling than serving their customers. Top selling SoHo home business owners put the customer before anything else. When they do that, everything else falls into place.

The business owner’s passion for the product is important, but not more important than providing attentive customer service. If you don’t satisfy your SoHo customer, it doesn’t matter if you have the most amazing product in the world.

SoHo customer service specialists make great X Power Square direct sellers. If customer service is your forte, hang up your headset and call me today at 801-809-7766!

New York Mega-Meals: Don’t Eat The Whole Thing!

New York Mega-Meals: Don't Eat The Whole Thing!

It’s no wonder that many Garden City children and teens struggle with weight issues. What is considered a ‘normal’ food portion has been getting bigger and bigger. In some cases, as with gargantuan Garden City fast food soft drinks and New York Costco muffins-on-steroids, it is absolutely ridiculous. And extremely unhealthy.

The findings from three large national surveys demonstrate:

‘Hamburgers have expanded by 23 percent; a plate of Mexican food is 27 percent bigger; soft drinks have increased in size by 52 percent, snacks, whether they be potato chips, pretzels or crackers, are 60 percent larger.’1

Garden City restaurants and New York food and beverage manufacturers are not the only ones sabotaging our children. Portion sizes have increased in homes, also.

If Garden City parents are going to help their children maintain a healthy weight, learning proper portion sizes is critical. If we don’t know the size of a healthy portion, how can we teach our children?

The Mayo Clinic website has a great slide show that helps New York parents and other children’s health advocates understand what ’4 ounces’ or a ‘half cup’ actually looks like. You can see it here: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/portion-control/NU00267

Prevent Sports Mouth Injuries For Garden City Kids

Prevent Sports Mouth Injuries For Garden City Kids

Active Garden City children are involved in a variety of different sports these days, and while this is great news for kid’s health, parents need to be aware of the risk of mouth injuries.

All Garden City children participating in contact sports can reduce the risk of mouth and tooth injuries by wearing a mouthguard. Properly fitted mouth protectors can prevent broken or lost teeth as well as lip, tongue, and jaw injuries.

Kids mouth protectors come in a variety of styles. ‘One size fits all,’ boil and bite, and custom. Not surprisingly, custom-fitted mouth protectors are the safest and can be made by your New York dentist to make sure your child has a perfect fit.

Mouth protectors are extremely important for New York children undergoing orthodontic treatment. Metal braces can cause serious oral injuries in instances of impact. (It can also cost New York parents a bundle to replace broken braces.)

Treating Garden City Kids’ Minor Cuts And Bumps

Treating Garden City Kids' Minor Cuts And Bumps

Spending lots of time outside is important for healthy kids in Garden City, and with all that outdoor adventure come the inevitable bumps, scrapes, and cuts. But parents in the SoHo, Manhattan, and Southampton areas shouldn’t fear, all you need to know are a few simple steps for treating your children’s minor injuries.

A minor cut should stop bleeding on its own, but using a clean cloth and applying gentle pressure may be necessary.

Once bleeding has stopped, rinse the wound with water and pull out any debris with alcohol-cleansed tweezers. The area around the wound can be cleaned with mild soap and a washcloth, no hydrogen peroxide or alcohol is necessary.

Once the wound is clean, apply a thin layer of antibiotic cream or ointment. Appropriate topical antibiotics can be found at any drugstore in the Garden City area. Next, you should cover your child’s wound with a bandage. When the bandage becomes wet or dirty it should be changed. Once a wound has healed enough to keep infection out, bandages should not be used since air exposure will speed your child’s healing.

Remember to watch for signs of infection such as redness, drainage, increased pain, swelling, or warmth. Contact your SoHo, Manhattan, or Southampton area pediatrician if you have any other concerns.

Garden City Children’s Heart Disease Risk

Garden City Children's Heart Disease Risk

A growing number of New York children are developing high cholesterol, high triglycerides, and type 2 diabetes which are all risk factors for heart disease. According to the American Heart Association, there is credible evidence that cholesterol buildup in arteries begins in childhood.

A recent Australian study claims that lifestyle changes made before adulthood, such as healthy eating habits, exercise, and weight management are likely to reduce the risk for heart disease later in life.

The three main risk factors for New York children in developing high cholesterol are heredity, diet, and obesity. Visit with your New York doctor to have your own cholesterol checked to make sure your kids aren’t at risk.

When shopping at your New York grocery store, stock up on healthy snacks like nuts, dried fruit, and yogurt. Helping New York kids and SoHo make healthy lifestyle choices now prepares them to have healthy lifestyles as adults.

As a health and wellness business owner and Garden City children’s advocate, I would love to share more information about children’s nutrition and healthy snacking. Please call or email me today.
